We met Umio completely by chance at the vet when we took our other pet, Aggie, for a checkup. There was a flyer for kitten adoption, so we asked to take a quick look. Inside the basket, there were four kittens. When we heard that only one of them was a boy, we felt an instant, unexplainable connection and decided to bring him home right then and there.
However, once we got home and weighed him, we were absolutely shocked. At about one month old, a kitten should normally weigh around 500 grams—but Umio weighed a mere 137 grams! From that day on, our immediate goal for him was simple but crucial: just eat, sleep, and poop to grow big and strong.
We named him Umio (which means “Ocean Boy” in Japanese) because he joined our family on Marine Day, a national holiday celebrating the ocean. Now, he is 9 years old and has grown up beautifully.
